Since the early 1990’s I’ve been involved with organising quadrennial UV Workshops in New Zealand, and have convened the last few, which have been hosted by NIWA. Here’s the promotional graphic, complete with now out-of-date NIWA logo that we’ve used to advertise the last one.
They’ve been pretty successful too, partly because we try to make sure that the meat of the presentations fit well within the audience’s 15 -minute attention span.
The most recent UV Workshop was in Wellington in 2018, so if they’re to continue, we’re about due for another...
A lot has happened on the UV front since those heady pre-Covid-19 days. These include:
Questions about future levels of UV and their interactions with climate change
Improved methods to find the associations between UV radiation and its harmful effects.
Health messaging associated with UV exposure (for both positive and negative health effects) including questions about the influence of UV on the transmission of Covid-19.
Environmental impacts such as algal blooms and other water quality issues that could be mitigated by UV treatment
Ongoing degradation of outdoor materials.
If we’re to host another, it should be in the autumn or spring of 2022, probably in New Zealand (Queenstown is nice and close to Lauder and Alexandra). But it won’t happen virtually, and it won’t happen without money. Hopefully NIWA would come to the party, but more would need to follow. A long lead-time is needed to organise this sort of thing properly. And somebody needs to put up their hand to take the reins now that I’m out to grass. Hopefully my colleague Ben Liley? (I’d have done it only in the unlikely event of somebody wanting to pay me wheel-barrow-full of money 😊).
Please let me know if you want to be involved with the organisation, and especially if are interested in being a sponsor …..
